Automated Refractor

Objective measurement of your eye's focusing power for precise prescriptions

Automated Refractor

An automated refractor is a computerized instrument used to measure how well your eyes focus light and to determine the lens prescription needed for clear vision. Unlike subjective refraction, where you respond to the optometrist's questions about which lens looks clearer, automated refraction provides objective measurements without requiring your input. This makes it especially useful for young children, patients with communication difficulties, and as a starting point for refining prescriptions in all patients.

The test is quick and completely painless. You simply sit in front of the automated refractor and look at a picture or target inside the instrument. The device projects infrared light into your eye and measures how the light is reflected back from your retina. By analyzing these reflections, the instrument calculates the refractive error of your eye — whether you are nearsighted (myopic), farsighted (hyperopic), or have astigmatism. The entire measurement takes just a few seconds per eye.

Automated refractors are highly accurate and consistent, reducing the chance of human error in prescription determination. However, the results are typically used as a starting point rather than a final prescription. Your optometrist will use the automated measurements alongside subjective refraction — where you compare different lens options — to fine-tune the prescription for your specific visual needs, lifestyle, and comfort.

In addition to determining eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions, automated refraction is valuable for screening children for vision problems, monitoring changes in vision over time, and assessing whether symptoms like headaches or eye strain may be related to uncorrected refractive errors.

At International Eye Hospital, our state-of-the-art automated refractors provide fast, accurate baseline measurements as part of our comprehensive vision assessment, ensuring that every patient receives a precisely tailored prescription for optimal visual clarity and comfort.
