YAG Laser

YAG laser capsulotomy is a quick, painless laser procedure used to treat posterior capsule opacification (PCO) — a common condition that can occur months or years after cataract surgery. During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The IOL is placed inside the lens capsule, a thin, clear membrane that held the natural lens. Over time, in approximately 20 to 30 percent of patients, this capsule can become cloudy or wrinkled, causing vision to become blurry or hazy again. This is sometimes called a "secondary cataract," though it is not actually a cataract returning.

YAG laser capsulotomy uses a Neodymium:Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet (Nd:YAG) laser to create a small, precise opening in the center of the cloudy posterior capsule. This allows light to pass through clearly to the retina once again, restoring the sharp vision you had after your original cataract surgery. The procedure is performed in the outpatient clinic, takes only 5 to 10 minutes, and requires no incisions, stitches, or anesthesia injections — only dilating eye drops.

During the procedure, you sit at the laser machine with your chin on a support. A special contact lens may be placed on your eye to focus the laser. You will see bright flashes of light as the laser creates the opening in the capsule. The procedure is completely painless. Afterward, your eye pressure will be checked, and you can usually go home within an hour.

Vision typically improves within hours to a day or two after the procedure. Most patients notice significantly clearer vision almost immediately. You may experience some floaters — small dark spots or cobweb shapes in your vision — for a few days to weeks after the procedure as microscopic capsule fragments settle. These usually diminish over time. The effect of YAG laser capsulotomy is permanent — once the opening is created, PCO cannot recur in that area.

At International Eye Hospital, our experienced ophthalmologists perform YAG laser capsulotomy using advanced laser systems, providing a safe, effective solution for patients whose vision has become cloudy after cataract surgery.
